How to Change your Car Oil

Performing an oil change is an important part of regular vehicle maintenance. Here are step-by-step instructions on how to perform an oil change:

1. Gather the necessary supplies:

  • New oil (check your vehicle's manual for the recommended type and quantity)
  • New oil filter
  • Drain pan
  • Socket wrench or box-end wrench
  • Oil filter wrench (if needed)
  • Funnel
  • Towels or rags
  • Disposable gloves
  • Jack and jack stands or ramps (if required)

2. Prepare the vehicle:

Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake. If necessary, raise the front of the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands or drive onto ramps

3. Drain the old oil:

Locate the oil drain plug underneath the engine. Consult your vehicle's manual if you're unsure. Place the drain pan underneath the plug to catch the old oil. Use a socket wrench or box-end wrench to loosen and remove the drain plug. Allow the old oil to drain completely into the pan.

4. Replace the oil filter:

Locate the oil filter, which is typically located near the drain plug. Use an oil filter wrench if needed to loosen and remove the old filter. Be cautious as it may contain hot oil. Before installing the new filter, apply a small amount of fresh oil to the rubber gasket on the top of the filter. Screw on the new filter by hand until snug. Do not over-tighten.

5. Add new oil:

Refer to your vehicle's manual for the recommended oil type and quantity. Insert a funnel into the oil filler opening, usually located on top of the engine. Slowly pour in the new oil, checking periodically with a dipstick to ensure you don't overfill. Add more if necessary.

6. Check for leaks and clean up:

After adding new oil, inspect around the drain plug and oil filter for any signs of leaks. Wipe off any spilled oil from surrounding surfaces using oil absorbents, shop towels or rags.

7. Dispose of old oil properly:

Pour the used oil from the drain pan into a sealable container suitable for recycling. Do not mix used oil with other liquids or substances. Take the used oil to a local recycling center or an auto parts store that accepts used oil.

8. Lower the vehicle:

If you raised your vehicle with a jack, carefully lower it back down using proper safety precautions.

Remember to consult your vehicle's manual for specific instructions and recommendations as they may vary depending on your make and model. Performing regular oil changes at recommended intervals helps maintain engine performance and prolongs engine life.
